What is Mead?
What is mead?
Mead is a fermented beverage made from honey! Commonly associated with the Vikings and Medieval Europe, mead is actually the oldest alcoholic beverage in history, dating back to ancient cultures throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Isn’t all mead sweet?
It doesn’t have to be! Mead can vary from sickly sweet to super dry. Wandering Sun Meadery has meads that range the spectrum from our semi-sweet Happy Oakcident mead to our very dry Horse with No Name.
Is it beer or wine?
It is neither. Mead is a beverage unto itself, and there are a lot of different varieties. Our current offerings at Wandering Sun Meadery are more akin to wines, using the same processes and equipment that you would expect to find in a winery, with the exception of the fermentable sugar being honey instead of grapes.
Having said that, we are starting production on our first session meads, which are carbonated and sit a lower ABV. Session meads share more similarities to ciders than to wines. Other meaderies are known for their braggots, which are a cross between a mead and a beer.
Where do we get our honey?
Wandering Sun Meadery sources honey for most of our products from local central North Carolina apiaries, unless the honey for a specific mead comes from a plant that is not native to NC. Our goal is to support local businesses wherever possible, and there is something to be said for being able to drink the flowers “out of your back yard”.
